After effectively being declared dead last fall, Sun Microsystems Inc.'s fading three-year-old bid to drum up interest in microprocessors that execute Java in hardware is showing renewed signs of life.

Analysis: Softcom purchase shows rise of network processors
Intel Corp.'s all-cash offer to acquire Softcom Microsystems Inc. (Fremont, Calif.) is only a fraction of the size of the company's spring purchase of Level One Communications Inc., but the move puts muscle behind Intel's announced intention to enter the network processor market. Softcom's reliance on a dedicated 64-bit proprietary processor at the heart of its GigaBlade architecture gives Intel an instant alternative to X86/Pentium, i960, and StrongARM cores to use in communication tasks such as packet header parsing and serial-line aggregation.

Intel, Hitachi back stacked chip-scale package
In an effort to establish a de-facto packaging format for chips used in the rapidly growing cellular-phone market, Sharp Corp. has signed on Intel Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. as the supporters of its stacked chip-scale package (CSP). Their move follows Mitsubishi Electric Corp.'s decision last September to use the same packaging format.

Epoc32, Windows CE to be ported to Infineon TriCore
Infineon Technologies AG said Epoc32, the real-time operating system of Symbian plc (London), and Windows CE of Microsoft Corp. will be ported to TriCore, Infineon's 32-bit embedded processor.

Fujitsu rolls VLIW architecture
Fujitsu Ltd. has announced a new very long instruction word (VLIW) processor that it will sell as both a stand-alone device and as a system-on-a-chip core for its 0.18-micron process technology. Based on VLIW expertise that Fujitsu has already applied to its supercomputers, the FR-V processor, code-named Venus, will be available in two flavors and will target a wide-range of consumer, communications and automotive applications.
