Oerlikon acquires Sony Blu-ray technology

MUNICH, Germany — Swiss machine manufacturer Oerlikon AG has announced a cooperation with Sony targeting at manufacturing Blu-ray disk media.
Sony will contribute its wet embossing technology for the production of 50GByte Blu-ray media. Oerlikon intends to integrate it into its Indigo line of media manufacturing machines.
Presently the company already produces 25GByte single layer BD media as BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE disks. Now Oerlikon plans to market a 50GByte module that can be used to upgrade existing product lines. The module is scheduled to hit the market already in 2007.
With the move, Oerlikon bets on the Sony technology as the winner in the standards war between Blu-ray and HD DVD. "Now that the industry has adopted Blu-ray as third generation in optical storage media, the cooperation between Oerlikon and Sony is a significant step towards supplying the manufacturing facilities", Oerlikon said in a press release.
