LONDON Unite, a workers union in the U.K., has announced that communications equipment maker Ericsson has decided to close a facility in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, which employs 350 people. Ericsson subsequently announced that it planned to cut more than 500 job in Germany and Britain as part of previously announced plans to save money, according to a Reuters report.
Between 350 and 400 engineering and white-collar jobs would go in Germany, out of a total workforce of about 2,400 there, the report said, citing an unnamed spokeswoman as its source.
The Beeston site, formerly a flagship site for Marconi prior to its acquisition by Ericsson, is being consolidated with the an operation at Coventry, the report said quoting the spokeswoman as saying that 320 people at Beeston would be affected and that 168 of them would be offered positions in Coventry.
"We will be pressing the company to demonstrate its continuing commitment to future investment in high tech skills and jobs in the UK and to maximize the opportunities for redeployment of the Beeston workforce to the company's new Ansty (Coventry) site," said Unite national officer, Peter Skyte, in a statement.
