PARIS Franco-US telecom equipment provider Alcatel-Lucent (Paris, France) confirmed its intention to shed about 850 jobs in France in 2009 and 2010.
This decision is part of a global restructuring plan to save 750 million euros of costs by the end of the year. The job cuts will happen mostly on a voluntary basis, a company spokesperson told Dow Jones Newswires.
Earlier this month, Alcatel-Lucent unions informed French press that Alcatel-Lucent intended to cut another 1,000 jobs in France in 2009 and 2010.
Unions then said the job cuts would affect several units, including administrative and sales positions and some industrial activities. It would also concern Alcatel-Lucent France, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise subsidiaries, the headquarters as well as the RFS (Radio Frequency System) subsidiary.
Angry workers at Alcatel-Lucent's site in Eu, in the French region of Normandy, decided today (July 23) to interrupt their work to protest against the planned 200 job cuts on their site.
Protests also occurred at Alcatel-Lucent Lannion, in Brittany, and at Alcatel-Lucent Orvault, near Nantes.
